Earn More As A Security Officer

EARN MORE as a Security Officer!

I’ve been working in the security industry since 1984 when I joined the Marine Corps. I often get asked “How can I make more?" while working in security.  Here are my TOP TEN tips.  These are BY FAR the FASTEST & EASIEST ways to earn more as a security officer.  Follow these tips and you'll earn more!

1. Education and Training

     Get Training

In California security officers are required to undergo 40 hours of mandatory training.  The first 8 hours are called the “Guard Card” class must be completed before you can work as a security officer.  Once you’ve completed this class and have your Guard Card you can work as a security officer in California.

But getting your guard card is just the start.  You’ll need to get an additional 16 hours of training within the first 30 days of working as a security officer and another 16 hours within the first 6 months of employment.  This training is your responsibility and all together adds up to 40 hours of training all California security officers are required to attend.

If you come to your new job with this training ALREADY COMPLETED you are ABOVE OTHER APPLICANTS and stand out as "ready to work".  Getting all your training is fast and easy.  You can do it online here:  https://onlinesecurityguardtraining.com/

2. Be available

Security Officers that get the most hours, best pay, most overtime and quickest promotions are officers that are AVAILABLE!  If you can work anywhere at any time then let your boss (or whoever does the schedule) know that so you can get a bigger paycheck right away!

3. Be Professional

As a hiring manager it’s disappointing when people attend an interview or dress or act in an unprofessional manner.  Make sure that you ALWAYS look & speak as a professional!  If you want to be treated professionally & make the money that a professional makes then you need to BE professional.

A struggling job market can poke holes in your security

When the United States' job market struggles we’re fighting to keep up with foreign competition, our jobs are being outsourced to other countries, we’re seeing massive layoffs due to automation and global commerce is driving down labor costs so that U.S. employers can’t afford to pay higher wages.

The second Pillar of Protection is: Jobs.

Probably the most obvious of the Pillars of Protection, because when people are out of work they’re desperate to provide for their families.

Desperation leads to higher crime rates across the country. When financial stability takes a nosedive, job security is the next to drop.

How financial instability can affect your business’s security

Shares

In my former post, I introduced you to the 3 Pillars of Protection: financial stability, jobs and crime rate. Today, let’s discuss financial stability and how it will affect your business’s security.

Prices are rising, access to credit isn’t what it was a decade ago, and the housing market is still shaky in many cities.

Wages aren’t rising as quickly as prices and the status of the stock market can all contribute to the state of financial stability across the United States.

While no one holds a crystal ball, some of the brightest minds in the business world are sounding alarms to financial instability we face now.

While no one holds a crystal ball, some of the brightest minds in the business world are sounding alarms to financial instability.

We see it every day: when massive amounts of people are laid off, their investments disappear, retirement funds crash, home values decrease, and the availability to finance purchases vanishes. It can literally cause chaos.

When people become desperate to provide for their families, crime rates inevitably increase. It’s essential to protect your business before this first pillar crumbles.

Lost assets and property damage don’t have to happen.

Delta Protective Services offers live video monitoring that can help you avoid loss before it happens.

Next week, we’ll review more of the second pillar: jobs. You won’t want to miss how automation and foreign labor can affect crime in your community.

Your Pillars of Protection are beginning to crumble

Shares

As a safety and security professional since I joined the Marine Corps in 1984, I firmly believe there are 3 Pillars of Protection that sway the needle from safety to uncertainty when it comes to crime rates, property damage and personal safety.

I’ve continuously witnessed what happens when one of the Pillars of Protection begin to crumble.

Allow me to explain.

I have never before seen all the Pillars of Protection begin to crumble at the same time.

Your Pillars of Protection

  •  Financial stability.
  •  Job opportunities and unemployment rate.
  •  Crime rates.

Not only are they crumbling, but the foundation that supports those pillars is beginning to crack. I, myself, am extremely worried.

I am worried for my family, I am worried for your family, I am worried for your business.

We are in troubling times.

This has kept me up at night for a long time, but there are things you can do to mitigate the risks and stack the deck in your favor.

We are in troubling times. The pillars of our society are crumbling. Our homes and businesses are exposed to increasing theft & vandalism.

I strongly believe I have found a solution that can help keep your business stay safe: live video monitoring.

Live video monitoring empowers you to see everything that's around your home and your business to protect you and keep you safe.

Even more, it protects you while you and your family sleep so when something does go wrong, the professionals monitoring your property alert the appropriate officials immediately, mitigating risk, theft and damage.

In my next post, I’ll present just how the Pillars of Protection are crumbling, discussing the economy and jobs and how it relates to an increase in crime.

It’s critical for the security of your business that you understand how this uncertainty can lead to an uptick in crime.

California Security Officer Licensing Requirements

Licensing Requirements for Private Security – What Business Owners Need To Know

This is not likely a topic you think about often but these easy-to-follow tips can save you from headaches, financial loss and liability. If you hire private security this is what Business Owners and Property Managers need to know.  Knowing the basics will keep you out of trouble with BSIS (Bureau of Security and Investigative Services), the California State Department of Consumer Affairs & State enforcement officers.

California State Licensing Requirements:

Any person or company that provides private security, loss prevention, executive protection, private investigations or security officer training services must be licensed by the State. The State does not care what you call the person or what they look like. The State focuses on the duties that the person performs. So if you call them an “usher”, have them wear street clothes and a windbreaker but they perform access control, bag checks, identify & remove rowdy guests, etc. then licensing is required. If you call them a “doorman” and they wear street clothes but their jobs includes access control, checking ID’s and removing unruly patrons then licensing is required.

California State licensing requirements are among the most stringent in the nation with significant penalties for anyone found to be in violation.

Licensing Requirements for Security Companies:

BSIS refers to a private security company as a PPO (Private Patrol Operator). Any company that provides people acting in a roll that might be considered a security or protective function are required to have a PPO license issued by BSIS. PPO’s employ uniformed and plainclothes security officers, loss prevention personnel and executive protection agents and dispatch them to protect persons or property or to prevent theft.

This PPO license allows you to hire employees (not “independent contractors”) that you provide to people or businesses. If you are a “temp agency” and hire out “night watchmen” then you MUST have a PPO license issued by the State. PPO licenses are issued by the California State Department of Consumer Affairs, Bureau of Security and Investigative Services. Anyone that provides services that does not possess a valid PPO is committing a crime under California State Business and Professions Codes. If a company or individual offers these services under a different name or appearance and say that a PPO is not required they are operating illegally.

The safety and security of your customers, employees, products, property and assets depends upon the private security vendor that you choose to hire and you should REQUIRE your security provider to prove that they & their employees are properly licensed & registered with the State. Click here to verify their license.

1. Your security vendor MUST possess a valid PPO.

2. All people working for them providing security services must also be registered with BSIS.

3. Make them provide you with a copy of their PPO & verify the “Guard Card” for each officer.

4. Go to the BSIS website to verify their licensing is valid.

Licensing Requirements for Security Officers:

All employees whose duties include a security, protective or loss prevention function, whether in uniform or plainclothes, whether they are an employee of your security vendor (PPO) or your own employee (Proprietary), must undergo a State required background check undergo State mandated training and possess a valid registration certificate from the BSIS.

The registration certificate for an employee of a PPO is called a “Guard Card”. Anyone working for a PPO is required to possess a valid Guard Card at all times while on duty. Failure to produce a Guard Card upon demand is punishable by a fine and administrative action from the State for both the security officer AND the PPO. The registration certificate for a Proprietary Security Officer (your own employee) is called a “PSO”.

Private security officers MAY NOT enter into an agreement (contract) to provide security services. Only a PPO may do this. Anyone providing security, protective or loss prevention services with only a Guard Card (and no PPO) is committing a crime under California State Business and Professions Codes.

REMEMBER:

1. Only a PPO can contract to provide security officers.

2. All employees of your PPO must possess a valid “Guard Card” issued by BSIS.

3. If your employees engage in security, protective or loss prevention functions they must possess a valid PSO issued by BSIS.

Requirements for Armed Personnel:

Security officers, alarm company employees, private investigators & executive protection agents, whether they are employees of a PPO or your own employees, may not carry a weapon unless they also have also possess a valid Firearms Qualification card & Guard Card issued by BSIS. The BSIS issued firearms card must also indicate they are qualified in the same caliber of firearm they are carrying. Off duty law enforcement officers who are working as security or personal protection must also comply with this requirement. A concealed firearm may not be carried unless they also possess a valid CCW (Carry Concealed Weapon) issued by their local law enforcement agency.

Failure to comply with these requirements is a criminal offence and may result in immediate arrest and eventual prosecution and revocation of any permits or licenses that may have been issued by BSIS.

Permits for Other Weapons:

The State of California also requires permits for:

· Tear Gas

· Pepper Spray

· Baton

In all cases they must have the valid permit for these weapons in their possession while they are carrying the weapon(s).

Additional Weapons and Security Accessories:

Currently BSIS does not currently require a permit for:

· TASER

· Stun Gun

· Handcuffs

If you choose to allow these items to be carried by security officers on your property you should require proof of training, although none if required by BSIS.

City or County Business License:

Cities and counties often require that business operating in their jurisdiction possess a current business license issued by the municipality. Many times people hiring private security mistake a city business license as the company being “licensed” to provide security. Remember that any company you hire to perform private security must provide you with both a PPO issued by BSIS and a business license issued by your local municipality.

Remembering the 2002 Winter Olympics – Salt Lake City, Utah

The Salt Lake City Olympics, 2002

In February of 2002 traveled to Salt Lake City and worked for a company providing security during the Winter Olympics.  We provided uniformed & plain clothed, armed & unarmed private security services to designated critical infrastructure in and around Olympic venues.  While I was away for 30 days my wife Kimberley ran Delta Protective Services, our California based private security & investigative business.

I arrived about a week before the Olympics began so I, along with a crew of about 50 other graduates from Executive Security International, could prepare. This week was spent receiving mandated Utah State security and firearm training and performing advance work on our assigned job sites. I also helped determine the best way to organized and deploy our team of agents.

Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT)

My first assignment was for the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) and used about 28 of our personnel. During this assignment we worked in conjunction with the SLCPD, Utah Highway Patrol & FBI under the direction of the Secret Service. The UDOT detail was one of the largest deployments we had and provided much satisfaction for a job well done. This detail accounted for about 85% of the time that I spent in SLC.

2002 Winter Olympics - Salt Lake City, Utah
Olympics NBC Security

The Grand America, NBC & Other Assignments

Another of our assignments was for downtown hotels. I got an opportunity to work at the Hilton & the Grand America. I also worked a detail for MacDonald’s Restaurants but my favorite assignment was working the NBC detail within the Grand America hotel. The hours were grueling but the job was rewarding.

During the course of my thirty days at the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics I was only able to take two days off, the first of which was only after working twenty straight 12-hour shifts!  During my first day off I had the privilege to attend an Olympic Medal awards ceremony! The other day off I took sight-seeing around the beautiful Salt Lake City area.

Executive Security International - A Team of Professionals

My coworkers were a top-notch team of security professionals! Most were, like myself, graduates of Executive Security International and had received the best training available. This coupled with their extensive experience in domestic and international protection created an outstanding working environment. The people of Salt Lake City were great hosts and the volunteer spirit of the community was unmatched. This is such a beautiful city! I was often awestruck at the sights around me, especially the stark contrast of a big American city at the base of the magnificent Rocky Mountains in the depths of winter.

Not On MY Watch

The learning opportunities for anyone working this event were phenomenal. The lessons learned on a daily basis and the relationships made last a lifetime. I am grateful for my involvement in this historic event and am proud that there were no significant security related incidents during the 2002 Winter Olympics. This was certainly do to the “Not on MY watch” attitude of all the security, protective and law enforcement personnel during this historic event.

Special Event Security

Your next event may not be the Olympics but if you want an “Olympic” level of service and protection then please contact me or any of the staff at Delta Protective Services. We look forward to the opportunity to serve you!

Copiers Pose Huge Security Risk for Business

Shares

Nearly EVERY Document is At Risk

We recently became aware of a news item that has potential staggering implication for the safety & security of your business information including personnel & financial records; literally anything that has ever been run through your copier.

Hard Drives

The risk comes from the hard drive that is an integral part of any digital copier. Typically, an image of each and every document that has been run through the machine may be stored on this hard drive. This includes documents that were copied, printed, faxed or scanned.

Ending Your Lease

At the end of your lease when the machine leaves your possession these document images remain on the hard drive within the copier and are easily accessed by anyone with the correct software, available for free on the internet. This information is potentially damaging to your business and a boon for anyone involved in information theft. In cases of protected information like medical records & credit reports your business may be in violation of statues and subject to fines.

We Keep You Safe

Delta Protective Services is taking the necessary steps to ensure that your information on our business machines is properly protected and will NEVER be released accidentally.

There is a new threat to your privacy and credit rating. Thieves can use a mobile scanner to read the Radio Frequency ID (RFID) tags embedded in your credit cards, debit cards, passport card, TWIC or enhanced driver’s license, unknown to you.  They can do this while walking by you or while standing in a crowd near you. Once detected, this information can be immediately emailed anywhere in the world…
